About

Parts & Labor is a non-profit artist residency that is dedicated to supporting a flourishing practice for artists who are actively parenting or supporting dependent parents and partners. Parts & Labor provides residency stays and generous stipends tailored to the unique needs of these artists.

Vision

Through an ongoing exchange with the local arts scene—and our neighbors—Parts & Labor visiting residents are afforded the opportunity and financial resources to make work within the context of a warm and welcoming community.

Artists need space and time to pursue their vision. Residencies are among the greatest opportunities for rejuvenation, connection, and artistic growth. Unfortunately, this path is virtually closed to parents and caregivers since so few residencies welcome families. We created Parts & Labor to address this gap, and to infuse the San Antonio art scene with fresh ideas and inspiration from our visiting artists.

We offer residents a studio and a living space that can accommodate families, and we offer a modest stipend that can be used for transportation, childcare, food, or materials. An on-site coordinator manages logistics so artists can focus on their work.

With input from residents should they desire, we present small exhibitions, family art workshops, poetry readings, craft talks, lectures, and much more — all FREE and open to the public.

Where

Artists are accommodated in a historical home in the Lavaca neighborhood of South San Antonio, Texas, on the corner of Labor Street, hence the name of the residency.
